Welcoming American soldiers
The end of World War 2 meant a great relief and joy for everyone after six years of German oppression. At the time, Ida Milotová lived on the third floor of the former Elektra cinema in Plzeň and, together with her sister, watched the streets from the window. “The first time that we saw American soldiers was when they were creeping along our street and looking for Nazi snipers. The Nazis were in the roof windows of the surrounding houses and shot at them. Since my sister and I had watched the street, we knew in which roof windows the Nazi snipers were and we tried to show the US soldiers in the street. One American saw us an asked us with a gesture to let him in to our place. They were behind our door in a moment. We let them in and each of them stood by one bedroom window facing the street. Sister and I had to hide in the bathroom. They started shooting and it was quiet after a moment. Ida became friends with many soldiers and exchanged letters for a long time. She went dancing and to the cinema with the soldiers and attended the official war end dinner. Americans also frequently visited the Roučeks. Ida was even asked to marry an American soldier but declined because she did not want to leave for the US.
