We left without weapons

Available in: English | Česky

Three members of the Mašín brother’s resistance group made up a plan of how to obtain weapons from a police station in Chlumec. They wanted to knock the policeman unconscious by hitting him in the back of his head and take away all the ammunition and guns or machine guns. They arrived at the scene on September 13th 1951. “My brother was supposed to hit him in the head. But by hitting someone in the head with a metal pole, which is what he did, won’t result in making the person unconscious. A better option is to use a stocking filled with sand or something like that.” Policeman Oldřich Kašík was not made unconscious by the blow in his head, and he started to reach for his gun. “We thought that there were other policemen on the top floor of the police station, we were worried they would attack us in our situation. So I shot him twice and killed him. And we left the place without any weapons.”

Josef Mašín

Josef Mašín

Josef Mašín was born March 8, 1932 in Lošany near Kolín as the second son of Josef Mašín, a legionnaire and hero of the resistance movement during WWII. He was brought up in the spirit of patriotism and traditions. After the communist coup d'état in 1948 the Mašín brothers decided to declare war on the new totalitarian regime: they formed a small resistance group which was supposed to take part in the anticipated anti-communist uprising. The group soon began with sabotage activities, with the aim to harm the socialist state economy and the morale of the members of the Communist Party and the public. The group's members were obtaining weapons and explosives from various sources, producing also some on their own. Several people, however, became victims to their assault actions, by which the group planned to obtain weapons or money. Josef, himself, shot two people to death. In October, 1951 both brothers were arrested together with their uncle Ctibor Novák in the evening before their first planned escape. Josef spent several weeks in custody. In 1953 the group's members made the final decision to leave the country. They wanted to join the American army in the West and fight an armed fight against communism. In October they crossed the border to East Germany and after 29 days of being chased by the East German army and police, three of the five refugees arrived in the American sector of Berlin. Josef Mašín then served in the U. S. Army for five years. He also lived in Köln, Germany for some time, married, and with his wife Eva, he had two daughters. In 1980 the family moved to Santa Barbara, California.

Chlumec nad Cidlinou, former SNB office

Available in: English | Česky

The town off Chlumec nad Cidlinou is situated in the Hradec Králové District. The Mašín Brothers group chose it as the target for its first major project, aiming to gain weapons from the former SNB office in Kozelkova Street. Sergeant Oldřich Kašík died during the attack on the station on 13 September 1951. The building is currently privately owned and bears a memorial plaque from the 1970s. The text on it is period-biased, but the house owner will not have it removed.
