St Bartholomew’s Cathedral is situated at Náměstí Republiky in the centre of Plzeň. Formerly a parish church, it became a cathedral after the formation of the Plzeň diocese in 1993. It was likely founded at the same time as the city in 1295 although the earliest surviving written mention of the structure dates back to 1307. During the course of centuries the cathedral was extended and repaired several times. Dominating the church and the square alike, the tower is more than 102 metres high.
