Prague 3 - Žižkov, Žižkov freight railway station

The dominant area in the central part of Prague 3 is occupied by the Žižkov Goods Station. Its employees erected the Czechoslovak flag on the station building on 5 May 1945 at 12:05, and shortly after that they disarmed the German military transport escort. Despite the expectations of the citizens who then broke into the station, only a few dozen rifles were seized. However, the station employees unloaded three unfinished Hetzer self-propelled guns. One was taken by the policemen of the 70th district of Strašnice, the second was placed by the station employees on the bridge over the entrance junction, and the third was given to the Žižkov rebels. In the evening of 5 May, the Czech National Council resorted to the station building, holding a meeting until the morning of 6 May, when it moved to the city centre. The reinforced concrete building of the Goods Station served as a safe shelter for the Žižkov citizens who had left the buildings endangered by fighting. The station employees moved out trucks to block the then Mladoňovicova Street, currently Jana Želivského Street. The first tanks of the Red Army arrived at the Žižkov Goods Station at noon on 9 May, bringing a guarantee that the Second World War in Europe was definitively over.
